GWOPA to hold event at WUF10 on Water Scarcity and Capacity Building in the MENA Region

The event will present the outcome of a regional consultation process GWOPA led with water utilities from the MENA region

On the occasion of the 10th Session of the World Urban Forum in Abu Dhabi, UAE, the Global Water Operators’ Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA) of UN-Habitat is organizing a networking event with the support of Abu Dhabi Department of Energy. The session, “Water Day zero: How can utilities stop the taps running dry? An action plan for capacity building on water scarcity through WOPs in the MENA region”, will be held on Wednesday, 12 February 2020, from 2pm to 4pm.

The event will focus on exposing the main challenges faced by water utilities from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region on water scarcity and the capacity building needs of those utilities on this topic.

GWOPA will present the outcome of a regional consultation process which GWOPA led with utilities from the MENA region. The consultation process was launched last year with an Expert Group Meeting held during WFES 2019 in Abu Dhabi and was concluded with a 2d EGM in January 2020.

A consensus was reached on the need to build the capacity of those utilities and on the use of WOPs as an efficient and cost-effective way of doing so. The resulting regional action plan for the utilities of 8 potential WOPs will be shared with the audience and a discussion with potential donors will explore funding mechanisms for its implementation.

More information on the regional consultation process is available here.
