Global Call to Strengthen Water and Sanitation Regulations at 2024 IWA Congress in Toronto

On 14 August 2024, the International Water Association (IWA) World Water Congress in Toronto hosted a landmark session titled Strengthening Water and Sanitation Regulation: A Global Call to Action.” This session marked the launch of a new collaborative effort aimed at elevating the role of water and sanitation regulation as a key driver in improving water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) systems worldwide.

The Call to Action, initiated by key partners such as IWA, the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Bank, ADERASA, ESAWAS, and LIS-Water, emphasises the need for stronger regulatory frameworks to address critical challenges, including climate change, aging infrastructure and public health risks.

During the session, GWOPA’s Julie Perkins highlighted the vital role of regulation in enhancing utility performance. She emphasized that regulation goes beyond compliance, driving innovation and the significant transformations needed in the sector. As a network of operators, the Alliance is fully committed to supporting this Call to Action and contributing to its design and implementation.

This global initiative is a pivotal step toward building resilient and equitable water and sanitation systems, ensuring a sustainable future for all.
