GWOPA joins the celebrations of the World Habitat Day

  • Urban October 2019: 31 Days of Promoting a Better Urban Future

Every year, October becomes the month to celebrate inclusive and sustainable cities and empowered urban communities. It also becomes the month to reflect on how to make a real change for a better urban future.

World Habitat Day, observed on the first Monday of October each year, supports UN-Habitat’s mission towards transformative change in cities and human settlements – to leave no one and no place behind.

This year, World Habitat Day theme Frontier Technologies as an innovative tool to transform Waste to Wealth is calling attention to the issue of waste, wishing to change the discourse into a positive one, where waste is presented as an opportunity to bring about wealth and change in the communities and cities where we live.

Frontier technologies, such as artificial intelligence or renewable energy technology, have huge potential to drive prosperity and accelerate efforts to achieve the SDGs. For example, wastewater biotechnology plays a central role in achieving SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation). In this year message, the UN-Habitat Executive Director Maimunah Mohd Sharif, reminds that “wastewater is an affordable and sustainable source (…) It can be used for food production through crop irrigation or raising fish. Nanotechnology can help to reuse wastewater in water-scarce countries”.

Around 80 per cent of wastewater is discharged in the world’s waterways, according to The World Bank. Wastewater urgently needs to be managed to respond to challenges such as those posed by water scarcity and pollution. Water Operators Partnerships (WOPs) can help to address this problem introducing wastewater treatment and recycling to improve the quality of their wastewater systems and provide water quality control.
