The awards recognize outstanding achievements and performance in the wash sector. The biggest winner of this year's edition was the Nkana Water & Sewerage Company (NWSC) picking up 5 awards. The Managing Director, Ms Diana Makwaba, reached number three on the list of best performing CEOs in the country.
Speaking on their success, Rose Enala Tembo, Public Relations & Communications Manager of NWSC commented, "We know that with this WOPs initiative, NWSC is positioning itself to achieving its vision of being a symbol of excellence in the water and sanitation industry."
NWSC, a public operator, provides water and sewerage services in the urban and peri-urban areas of Kitwe, Kalulushi and Chambishi in Zambia and is currently engaged in a WOP with Swaziwater of Swaziland. Through direct mentorship from a peers, NWSC has been able to implement significant changes in its working patterns to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
This WOP is one of the 9 OFID-funded WOPs being directly supported in Africa by GWOPA with view to enabling operators to implement short-term changes and develop mid-term performance improvement plans. These WOPs will support operators to ensure sustainable progress in managerial and operational capacity.
NWSC was awarded in the following categories:
1. Best submitted data i.e. completeness and accuracy of data submitted in the NWASCO system
2. Most improved CU in Water Quality
3. Best CU in Water service coverage
4. Best CU in Sanitation coverage
5. Most improved CU in O+M Cost Coverage by Collection
