Representatives from public Spanish water and sanitation operators meet at the headquarters of the water operator of Gijon (EMA) to move forward their actions in the field of international cooperation and Water Operators’ Partnerships (WOPs). This meeting, organized by AEOPAS, the association of public water and sanitation operators of Spain, and GWOPA/UN-Habitat, gathers utility staff from Badajoz, Barcelona, Seville, Asturias and other cities in Spain.
Recognizing the contribution of water operators in global efforts to increase access to sustainable basic services through initiatives such as WOPs, participants were invited to share their first-hand experiences in these actions. WOPs have already allowed for expertise and knowledge from Spanish operators to be transferred to operators in a number of Global South countries and regions including Latin America and the Arab region. By helping operators in need to face challenges and build enabling conditions for sustainable water management and quality service provision, WOPs and other cooperation initiatives are advancing in line with work towards achieving the Human Right to Water and Sanitation and Sustainable Development Goal 6.
Examples of Spanish operators involved in WOPs can be found on GWOPA’s WOPs database, these include: PROMEDIO (Extremadura), Barcelona (Catalonia), Aigues del Prat (Catalonia), EMASESA (Andalusia), City of Zaragoza (Aragon) among others.
